June 9, 2023 - June 10, 2023

Toronto Public Tech Workshop 2023

The Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society is pleased to announce the call for papers for the first annual Toronto Public Tech Workshop. The workshop will take place June 9–10th, 2023, in person at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.

The purpose of this workshop is to allow colleagues to present work—whether in progress or finished—which explores the use of technology for public purposes. We welcome both theoretical and empirical papers from any discipline.

The workshop will feature about a dozen papers. We will spend about an hour on each paper. Meals and a reception will be provided, and we will cover the hotel costs of presenters.

We welcome paper or poster proposals on any topic dealing with public technology, broadly defined.

To submit a proposal, please send an abstract and short biography to sri.communications@utoronto.ca with the subject line “Toronto Public Tech Workshop.”

The deadline for proposals is April 30th, 2023. Decisions will be communicated by May 8th, 2023.

About the Schwartz Reisman Institute

Located at the University of Toronto, the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society’s mission is to deepen our knowledge of technologies, societies, and what it means to be human by integrating research across traditional boundaries and building human-centred solutions that really make a difference. The integrative research we conduct rethinks technology’s role in society, the contemporary needs of human communities, and the systems that govern them. We’re investigating how best to align technology with human values and deploy it accordingly. The human-centred solutions we build are actionable and practical, highlighting the potential of emerging technologies to serve the public good while protecting citizens and societies from their misuse. We want to make sure powerful technologies truly make the world a better place—for everyone.
