I am proud to welcome Donna Kidwell as the University of Toronto’s newly appointed Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO). She will join us on May 27, 2024.

Donna brings a wealth of experience having served for 18 years as an information technology leader in large R1 public institutions. She has a proven track record of leadership in information technology and security from her time at Arizona State University (ASU), an institution known for its innovative approach to education and technology. In her dual role at ASU as Deputy CIO and Chief Information Security and Digital Trust Officer, Donna was instrumental in driving information security initiatives and fostering a positive culture. Her strategic vision and collaborative leadership style were key in executing ASU’s information security strategic plan, ensuring the safety of stakeholders in the digital environment.

Donna’s commitment to building relationships within a trust-based organization aligns with the IT@UofT vision. Her approach to cyber security is not just about protecting assets but also about enabling a framework for innovation, learning, discovery and strengthening ties with key national partners such as CANARIE / CanSSOC. This perspective is crucial as we execute our Information Security Strategic Plan and continue to advance the University’s mission in a digitally connected world.

Donna has a Doctor of Business Administration / Innovation from Grenoble Ecole de Management and a Masters of Science / Technology from McCombs Business School, University of Texas at Austin.

With an academic background in science and technology commercialization and a hands-on role as the Chief Technology Officer during her three year tenure at EdPlus, Donna has demonstrated her ability to lead technological transformations that respect privacy and promote inclusivity. Her executive sponsorship of the Trusted Learner Network and her work in reimagining digital credentials highlight her dedication to creating strategies that foster transparent decision-making and build trust.

As the University of Toronto’s CISO and Deputy CIO, Donna is set to have a transformative impact as she champions a secure, agile, and resilient digital future for our community. We are excited to embark on this journey with her at the helm of our information security and IT governance.

I would also like to thank Deyves Fonseca, who has done an outstanding job as acting CISO over the last several months. Going forward, Deyves will resume his previous role as Associate Director, Information Security Operations, in addition to becoming the Deputy CISO.

Please join me in welcoming Donna and congratulating Deyves.
