How long have you worked at U of T?
I joined U of T on May 15, 2023. So, it’s been a little over a year now.
What is your secret or not-so-secret talent or hobby outside of work?
I love reading fictional novels, particularly romance and thrillers. However, as I get older, I find myself reading various genres of books. A few years ago, I read a psychological thriller called The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides – I was surprised to enjoy this genre, but I found it unpredictable and full of exciting plot twists.
One of my favourite books is The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
How and why did you get involved in this hobby?
Since English is not my first language, I began reading novels in English quite late. I found that reading helped me improve my vocabulary and reading comprehension. I read my first English novel, A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, when I was 15 years old. I began with easy reads and gradually moved on to more challenging novels, but I still enjoy the quick and easy reads to this day.
Do you have any outstanding memories or accomplishments from this hobby?
I love spending my free time reading – it makes me feel productive.
I usually set a yearly reading goal using the iPhone app, Books, and I try to complete it. During the pandemic, I was able to read a lot and achieve those goals quite easily.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’ve had a fantastic experience working at U of T so far. Everyone I work with is incredibly nice, and I look forward to continuing to work with all my wonderful colleagues.
If anyone has a similar interest in books, please feel free to connect with me! I would love to share the list of novels I have read so far and hear your recommendations.
