The Information Technology Services (ITS) Administrative Data Centre’s generator will be keeping ITS customers up and running next month when the building goes dark for scheduled maintenance.

U of T Facilities & Services has scheduled electrical maintenance requiring a complete shutdown of the McLennan Physics Building’s high-voltage electrical supply on Oct. 5, from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The shutdown could last the full 18 hours.

Without proper scheduled preventative electrical maintenance, electrical systems deteriorate and fail. But another reason for the data centre having its own dedicated generator was the inevitability of the University’s own planned major building preventative electrical maintenance cycles. This year, Facilities & Services is tackling, among others, the McLennan Physical Laboratories building where the ITS Administrative Data Centre is located.

ITS is also lending technical support to the Department of Physics, which has two neighbouring laboratories with freezers and experiments that would not be able to endure 18 hours without power.
