I am pleased to welcome Nathan Corwin as the University of Toronto’s inaugural Chief Information Security & Digital Trust Officer (CISDTO) — a new role that marks an important leadership moment as the university strengthens its focus on digital trust and cyber security. Nathan will join us on March 2, 2026.

Nathan brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education IT and cyber security from Arizona State University — one of the largest universities in the United States, serving approximately 190,000 students annually and ranked #1 in innovation by U.S. News & World Report for 11 years. Most recently, he served as the Executive Director for cyber security in Enterprise Technology, where he operationalized technology and strategy to support the security and resilience of the ASU Public Enterprise.

Nathan’s career at ASU spans technical operations, service delivery and enterprise leadership. He began supporting student-focused services and open-access computing, later leading IT help desk transitions, contributing to CRM deployments, directing IT service management and serving as Executive Director for service delivery. This breadth of experience has given Nathan a deep understanding of how secure and reliable technology enables teaching, research and institutional trust.

Nathan’s leadership is grounded in the belief that digital trust is an approach, not a program — one that aligns protection, governance and human behaviour and is built through strong cross-institutional relationships. His leadership experience in a large, federated university environment has informed an approach that focuses on creating clarity rather than control, early risk awareness and shared accountability.

The CISDTO role reflects the university’s deep commitment to digital integrity, transparency and human-centred innovation. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and supporting the overall IT@UofT strategic plan, the CISDTO provides leadership and oversight of U of T’s Information Security and Digital Trust program. Nathan will lead a broad portfolio that includes enterprise information security projects, identity and access management, application and infrastructure security, incident response, and the secure adoption of artificial intelligence across the tri-campus.

As U of T’s inaugural CISDTO, Nathan is well positioned to make an impact by championing a culture of digital trust and guiding responsible adoption of emerging technologies — ensuring privacy, safety and accountability remain central to the university’s digital ecosystem.

I would also like to extend a sincere thank-you to Deyves Fonseca, who has done an outstanding job serving in both the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer and Acting CISO roles through a period of significant leadership transition at ITS over the past two years. Deyves has led with deep expertise and a genuine commitment to the university and its community. He will resume his previous role as Associate Director, Information Security Operations and Deputy CISO, and we are grateful for his continued leadership, dedication and steady presence.

Please join me in welcoming Nathan to the University of Toronto.
