Thursday@3 – Leveraging generative AI to improve digital collections findability
January 29, 2026, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Presenter: Furquan Hassan, AI Special Projects Developer, ARC
Learn how Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and Academic, Research & Collaborative (ARC) Technologies used AI to improve searchability across large digital collections by:
- Applying vision-language models for optical character recognition (OCR) and large language models for metadata extraction
- Moving from exploratory Jupyter Notebook work to a production-ready, distributed graphics processing unit (GPU) pipeline
- Leveraging distributed inference pipeline on supercomputer GPU clusters to reduce processing time from nearly a year to just a few weeks
- Solving real-world challenges such as model selection, workflow modularity and infrastructure scaling
Come ready to learn and contribute to our collective growth in this emerging field.
