Building a culture of learning: ITS Discovery Learning initiative
Published on: September 16, 2025
Throughout August, Information Technology Services staff engaged in a new self-directed Discovery Learning initiative. Designed to be flexible, informal and team friendly, the initiative encouraged exploration as part of one of our core values: fostering a culture of learning.
ITS staff set aside time during their workday to develop new skills and experiment with technologies to keep up with today’s rapidly evolving landscape. Learning took many forms — from online reading and AI-assisted experimentation to structured certifications and peer-led tutorials.
Laurie Harrison, director of Digital Learning Innovation notes, “Curiosity and empowerment thrive when learning is treated as an integral part of the workday, not a detour from it.”
When asked about their areas of focus, staff highlighted the following topics:
- AI and generative technologies
- Data analytics and tools
- Development platforms and tools
- Project and work management methodologies
- Learning design and communication
- Security and authentication
- Accessibility and inclusive design
- UX/UI design tools
- Standards and data architecture
Key takeaways and observations
Via a feedback survey, many staff noted that they explored AI tools, recognizing their potential to transform work, but also stressing the need for critical evaluation and proof-of-concept testing. Peer learning also stood out as highly valuable, with informal tutorials and collaborative workshops strengthening knowledge sharing and community.
Participants also pointed to the importance of staying up-to-date with platform changes, security practices and emerging technologies. Staff felt motivated to keep learning, excited to apply new skills and dedicated to aligning with IT@UofT objectives.
The Discovery Learning initiative has highlighted how continuous learning is essential for both personal growth and organizational resilience. ITS staff are encouraged to continue learning and exploring in ways that best fit their goals and work styles. Looking ahead, ITS leadership are committed to continue integrating learning into our everyday work, with future initiatives aimed at maintaining momentum and making professional development a regular part of our practice.
