Technical Advisory: Wireless (Private IPs)
Published on: February 6, 2015
Information Technology Services will be undertaking a project to modify the U of T wireless network (UofT SSID) for the downtown campus to assign private IP addresses to connecting devices. The assigned private IPs will ultimately be translated to public IPs through the use of a NAT solution. The NAT solution will be deployed at the edge of our wireless network; all wireless devices will appear to be coming from a public IP address. Only the wireless devices themselves will see the private IP address assigned to them.
ITS is planning to start assigning private IPs as of Monday, February 9, 2015. We expect that this update will take about a month to complete. A number of test deployments have not yielded any indications of issues that could impact usage with this solution.
If users experience any operational issues, please report them immediately to the Information Commons Help Desk for tracking and assignment.
If you have any concerns regarding this change, please feel free to contact Doug Carson, Senior Manager, Enterprise Networking.
A detailed technical rationale for this initiative has been posted to the internal InfoTech communications channel.
