Extending Attachments Safety Measures
Published on: January 28, 2015
In an effort to help further reduce email virus attacks like the kind we experienced last week, we are extending some of our existing measures related to .zip attachments.
As users may be aware, zip attachments that arrive from outside the University’s email systems are already being flagged with appended filenames to alert end users to the possible risk.
What will change?
For UTORmail customers:
Moving forward, for messages sent by UTORmail customers, *.zip attachments will now also have the filename renamed by appending “ -utCAUTION! “ to the filename.
For UTORExchange customers:
For messages sent by UTORExchange customers, any message with an attachment filename containing the sub-string “.zip” will have the text “utCAUTION: .ZIP ATTACHMENT” pre-appended to the subject line and the line “PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN OPENING .ZIP ATTACHMENTS AS THEY MAY CONTAIN VIRUSES” appended to the end of the body. The attachment filename will not be renamed.
As always, customers who have concerns or need support will be directed to their local IT professional or the Information Commons.
