IT@UofT takes to the ice for the fourth annual hockey game & free skate!

Published on: April 9, 2026

On March 25, more than 100 people filled the stands at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Arena to rally behind colleagues for the fourth annual IT@UofT hockey game — a growing tradition that brings together teams, departments and plenty of spirit.

This year introduced a new twist: an hour of free skate following the game. The addition opened the ice to an even broader crowd, from confident skaters showcasing their moves to first-timers finding their footing along the boards. Long after the final whistle, the arena still buzzed with laughter, encouragement and a shared sense of community.

On the ice, the teams were made up of community members from across the university. IT staff from Rotman School of Management, School of Continuing Studies, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, the University Registrar Office and more came together, representing the diverse and interconnected nature of IT@UofT.

Leadership brought strategy and spirit behind the benches. The blue team was coached by ITS’ Chief Information Officer Donna Kidwell and KPE’s Chief Administrative Officer Paul Handley, while the white team was coached by ITS’ Deputy CIO Zoran Piljevic and SCS’ Manager, Instructor and Program Services Janice Spencer.

Adding to the atmosphere for the 80+ staff attending virtually, Jordan Holmes and Marden Paul provided colour commentary to the live stream, keeping the viewers engaged.

While the blue team came out victorious, with a score of 5 – 3, both teams brought energy and sportsmanship to the ice.

This event continues to grow as a celebration of connection, where colleagues become teammates, leaders become coaches and the U of T community comes together both on and off the ice.

“It’s heartening to see how this event continues to bring people together each year,” reflects organizer Laurie Harrison, director, Digital Learning Innovation, ITS. “Thank you to everyone who showed up as a player, casual skater or cheering from the stands. I hope to see you all again next year.”
