CENTRAL DATA BACKUP - UTORRECOVER: Professionally managed backup solution provided by Information Technology Services (ITS). The service is available to any University faculty member or department. Other than the requirement that the client system be on the University’s network, there are virtually no restrictions on the type of hardware, operating system or total amount of data to be backed up.

DESKTOP ENCRYPTION: In order to help departments comply with applicable privacy legislation, ITS offers the University of Toronto IT community recommendations and guidelines on how to configure full disk encryption. Full disk encryptions encrypt all of the data on the hard drive in a single, initial pass called 'conversion'. Once this conversion is complete, all subsequent encryption and decryption operations are transparent to the user. Full disk encryption is considered the best practice for maintaining the integrity of sensitive data-at-rest by protecting all of the data that is saved on the disk. This includes operating system files, temporary data, recycled files, paging and hibernation files, and the Windows registry.

SSL/TLS CERTIFICATES: The ISEA unit of Information Technology Services facilitates the purchase of Comodo Group TLS (formerly known as SSL) Certificate products for University server administrators. Purchasing through this service provides advantages over purchasing direct from a commercial Certificate Authority:
  • Completion of the site validation process for the utoronto.ca or toronto.edu domains.
  • Significant cost reduction.
  • ISEA implements a departmental contact assessment process to ensure there is appropriate authorization to use server certificates (see the note in the link below for more details).
  • Notification of imminent certificate expiry is provided at least two weeks before the expiry date.
